Betty Fifer

Fall is just around the corner and that brings memories of the past falls and the Fall Festivals. I remember that Palmyra had their fall festival on Main Street. Other memories of going to the orchards and getting several bushels of apples and always their jugs of apple cider. It was so good. Mom stored the apples in the cellar and I liked the cider when it was starting to turn into vinegar, it had a little bite to it. We’d gather the dropped pears off the ground because for several years we went to an evenig of making cider and homemade donuts which was at the J.L. Jennings home in Dover. He owned a cider press. He had two sons, Donald (deceased) and Lester Jennings who lives in the Dover community and married Frances Shumate. Her family was a strong part of the Dover community and we went to the Dover and LaGrange Schools. The juice from pears makes great cider.

Don will celebrate his birthday on Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 25, the LaGrange School will be having it’s school reunion and on Oct. 2, the Lewistown School reunion will be held and that same evening, Mt. Olivet Baptist church will be having their annual hayride, wiener roast and homemade donuts. Everyone welcome to attend on Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. Come and have old fashioned fun.

We got to see our grandson Isaac Fifer and his wife, Shelby. The Air Force has sent them to a new area to do his job of recruiting. They were on the way to Collegetown PA., jus a few more years and he will have in twenty years of service, It doesn’t seem possible. When Don and I traveled, we went many summers and falls working in the middle of New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. There is so much history about our country and the colors are so beautiful and many of my families’ ancestors come from those states, starting in New York in 1605.
