Artist Carol Burns at Canton Public Library
The Canton Public Library’s Guest Artist Series continues in November featuring the artwork of Carol Burns. A public reception hosted by the Canton Area Arts Council is planned for Thursday, November 9 from 5:30-7:00 PM at the library.
Carol Burns is an artist and art instructor in the local area. She holds a BSE in Art Education from Truman State University and an MA from California State University. Her teaching experiences include 2D design, 3D design, and painting classes at John Wood Community College. She has also taught fibers, interior design and methods of teaching arts at Hannibal LaGrange University.
Carol says her passion has always been watercolor, but more recently has discovered the medium of handmade paper. She says, ”This new medium has created an adventure for me. I am intrigued by the process as well as its versatility to merge with other media.”
Many of the materials used in creating her paper are recycled, such as old phone books, paper bags, wrapping paper, etc. Carol finds inspiration in the rhythms found in nature, such as the movement an animal forms crossing the land, the repetition of waves washing ashore, or the patterns found in the elements of nature.
Carol says, “The process of paper making is a journey for me. The journey begins with the blending of the pulp which is then cast into forms. When the forms have dried, the surface of the paper is altered in various ways. It is my intent to create an abstract representation of the essence of the subject. I would like for the viewer to visually experience the movement of the waves, feel the seaweed wrap around their ankles, or enter the caverns and spaces created within the art work. I invite you to take the visual journey.”
Carol’s artwork will be on display in the library throughout the month of November.
The reception and art exhibit are open to the public and are suitable for all ages.
The library is located at 403 Lewis St. in Canton, MO and is open Tuesday through Friday 9 AM - 6 PM and Saturday 10 AM - 2 PM. Visit the library at www.cantonmopubliclibrary.org, on Facebook at Your Canton Public Library, or call 573-288-5279.
