DAVID SCHLOTTER

June 12, 2024

David Winters Schlotter, 69, of Keokuk, Ia., passed away on May 22, 2024, in Iowa City in the presence of his children and with a full head of hair.

David was born January 25, 1955, in Keokuk, Ia., one of three children of Fred and Jessie Schlotter. After graduating from Canton R-V High School, David spent time as a tugboat deckhand pushing barges on the Mississippi River and as an employee of Gabe Logsdon & Son Grain Elevator before beginning a 40-year career with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He enjoyed travel – particularly around the Nebraska Sandhills, the Badlands of South Dakota, and much of Wyoming and Montana. Whether at work, around town, or abroad, he enjoyed having conversations with friends old and new; he had an impressive ability not just to put names with faces, but to remember the stories that people cared to share with him. When he wasn’t exchanging stories with friends and neighbors, he enjoyed reading about world history and current events, watching movies, listening to NPR, and spending time on the family farm. He took pride in maintaining his house and lawn, as well as his many vehicles and motorcycles.

David is survived by his children, Lisa (Seth) Louton of Hot Springs, Ark., and Peter (Erin) Schlotter of Peoria, Ill.; brother, Mark (Barb) Schlotter of Canton, Mo.; as well as nephews, nieces, and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer; his parents; and sister, Judy Waite.

A visitation will be held at Arnold’s Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., on Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
