LOREN JENKINS HUMPHREY

Loren Jenkins Humphrey MD, PhD, age 93, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024 in St. Louis MO.  He was born May 4, 1931 in Springfield, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Janice A. Humphrey.

He is survived by his four children, Peter Humphrey MD, PhD (Kay) of Guilford Conn., Mark Humphrey MD (Sherry) of Colorado Springs Colo., Paul Humphrey MD (Lisa) of Columbia Mo., and Lori Probst (Jim MD) of St. Louis, Mo., twelve grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Loren graduated from Albion College (Michigan) in 1953. He obtained his MD and MS degrees (1956-58) and training in general surgery (1959-1963) from the University of Illinois, Chicago.  He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, an honorary medical society.   In 1967, he went on to earn a PhD in immunology at the University of New York, Buffalo.  He had a distinguished academic and medical career, serving as Chairman of Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Oral Roberts School of Medicine. Half of his career focused on surgical oncology and the other half on cancer research and teaching. He published over 160 scientific and medical papers, wrote medical books and book chapters and delivered over 140 lectureships and speeches.  He pioneered immunotherapy for cancer.  He received the Kansas Scientist of the Year award, the Shabbanou award for distinction in cancer research, and teaching awards from the University of Missouri where he was Professor of Surgery.  He served on the editorial board of several medical journals and various community boards.

Retiring in 1995 from the University of Missouri, Loren focused his time on writing and published 7 books.  He had a keen interest in genealogy and Missouri history – an interest that is reflected in several of his books. He was an avid golfer, an accomplished and talented painter, taught Sunday School for 12 years, and held an unwavering and abiding Christian faith throughout his life. His was a life well-lived.

A private graveside service was held on June 29, in Canton Mo.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Loren’s name to your charity of choice.
