Smokey Bear Reading Challenge

September 04, 2024

The USDA Forest Service is collaborating with public library systems across the country on the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge in celebration of Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday.  The program is designed to be a fun and easy way to engage children in reading about wildfire prevention, forests, and natural resource careers, while exploring their local environment.
The Canton Public Library launches the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge on September 1 and the challenge will run through November 28.  While geared towards children, readers of all ages are welcome to participate.  To complete the challenge, readers must read 3 books on wildfire prevention or the environment and earn 5 activity badges.  Participants may sign up using their Beanstack app, or pick up a paper reading and activity log at the library. A prize bag will be given to all who complete the challenge.
Other fun activities at the library will include making Smokey the Bear crafts and a Smokey the Bear Scavenger Hunt. For questions, please call the library.
The library is located at 403 Lewis Street in Canton.  It is open Tuesday - Friday 9 AM to 6 PM and Saturdays 10 AM to 2 PM.  Visit the library at www.cantonmopubliclibrary.org, on Facebook at Your Canton Public Library, or call 573-288-5279. Mary Kay Lane, Director.
