November Library Guest Artist

October 31, 2024

The Canton Public Library welcomes basket-maker Pat Miller as Guest Artist for the month of November. A variety of her baskets will be on display all month. A Guest Artist Reception will be held on Thursday, November 7 from 5:30-7:00 at the library. All are welcome.
Pat began making baskets in 2000, after taking a class from Betty Jo Lloyd. “I have always loved baskets,” Pat said, “and Betty Jo was a great teacher. Betty Jo could manipulate a sloppy basket back to a good form and we would carry on. It often took 2 or 3 class sessions to finish a basket. She also taught sewing, knitting, and many more arts.” Betty Jo also brought in a basket weaver from the Lake of the Ozarks who taught the class to make white oak baskets. “It was quite different working with the oak than it was our regular reed,” Pat said.
Pat’s first basket was called a gathering basket, and since then she has taught others to make baskets as well. “I don’t make many anymore because I have so many and I don’t have the guidance of Betty Jo, who passed away several years ago,” Pat said. “But I still have the materials and I still love making them.”
All are invited to view Pat’s baskets at the Canton Public Library during November, and to attend the Guest Artist Reception on November 7. The reception is co-sponsored by the Canton Area Arts Council. The event is appropriate for all ages.
The library is located at 403 Lewis St. in Canton, MO and is open Tuesday through Friday 9 AM - 6 PM and Saturday 10 AM - 2 PM. Visit the library at www.cantonmopubliclibrary.org, on Facebook at Your Canton Public Library, or call 573-288-5279.
