Seeking Used Lick Tub Donations

April 10, 2025

The University of Missouri’s Nutrition program is calling on local farmers to donate used lick tubs to help support their work in adult and youth programming across the state.
The tubs will be repurposed as containers for garden planting, creating sustainable, hands-on learning opportunities for participants.
Lick tubs are made of a durable plastic that make for an excellent container garden. The University of Missouri Health and Human Science’s staff along with SNAP Ed staff intend to use the donated tubs to grow vegetables and herbs as part of an educational project focused on nutrition, sustainability, and local food production. These garden projects will also serve as a valuable resource for hands-on learning, allowing students to study and understand the connection between food production and healthy eating habits.
“We are excited about this opportunity to repurpose lick tubs into functional garden containers,” said Deann Turner, Northeast Region Nutrition Program Manager at the University of Missouri. “This project not only supports sustainability but also provides a unique chance for students to engage with the local community and learn how to grow fresh, nutritious food in an eco-friendly way.”
How Farmers Can Help: University of Missouri Extension Livestock Field Specialist Brenda Schreck says, “farmers with empty lick tubs are encouraged to donate them to the University of Missouri”. The tubs will be collected and used to create container gardens in a collaborative effort involving farmers in the community and faculty from the University’s nutrition program. Anyone interested in donating tubs can contact Brenda Schreck at 573-767-5273  or Deann Turner, 573-769-2177 or turnerde@missouri.edu for drop-off locations details.
Tubs are needed statewide and can be donated at any time.
