Juneteenth Celebration
July 02, 2025

Juneteenth events were recently held in Canton. On June 19 at the Canton Public Library Miss Juneteenth opened the program. Phyllis Dean began with a poem by Langston Hughes, The Negro Mother. Then W.T. Johnson told the story of Opal Lee. Events were also held June 20 in Martin Park. Miss Stallings had a reenactment in Lincoln Colored School with the Story Of Juneteenth, using local children from Canton. Miss Opal Lee marched through our town with those who were able to walk giving them the experience she had walking to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
A healthy Lewis County requires great community news.
