The Highland Cougars Cross Country team traveled to Bowling Green for the last regular season cross country meet of the school year. Coach French said, “We had some of the best races of the season tonight, which puts us in perfect position headed into the District race next Saturday!” While no Highland runner came away with a medal, the Varsity boys team finished with three PR times and the total spread from Highland’s top runner to the fifth  place runner was only 28 seconds. Nathan Caudill (19:11) was Highland’s top runner and was only one second off of breaking his PR. Connor Zulauf (19:25.29) was only 13 seconds behind Caudill and Evan Frieden (19:25.67) set a new PR finishing less than second behind Zulauf. Logan Frieden (19:33) was next for the Cougars and set his PR, as did Tyler Seals (19:39).
In the girl’s division, Eva Logsdon (34th ) also set a new PR for Lady Cougars finishing with a 22:29. AJ Caudill (54th - 23:45) had a strong race as well, with Isabelle Richardson (30:06) and Chynna Eaton (34:16) comprising the rest of the Lady Cougars competing at Bowling Green.
On Oct. 25, the Jr. High runners (Leah Caudill, Aiden Martin, and Nick Caudill) competed at the Middle School State Championship Races in Wheatland, MO at the Lucas Oil Speedway. Coach French said, “All three runners represented Highland very well.” In the first race of the meet, Aiden Martin (13:24.4) finished in 42nd place and Nick Caudill (14:34.10) finished in 107th place out of 246 runners in their race.
In the girl’s division, Leah Caudill (16:44.44) finished in 106th place out of 190 runners. Coach French added, “Leah had to fight through some illegal contact as she was passing a girl at the finish, which should have led to that girl’s disqualification, but the truth is Leah handled the whole thing like the sweet kid that she is. She really represented Highland and what it means to be a Cougar well!”
The Jr. High season is officially over, but the varsity runners will travel to Linn, MO for the Class 2 District Championship race on Nov. 1. The top 30 runners in that race will qualify for the State Championship the following Saturday.
