DONNA JOHNSON

Donna Jean Conner-Johnson died at St. Vincent’s Home in Quincy, Ill., on February 15, 2022. Donna was born February 7, 1948 in Quincy, Ill., She was the daughter of Freddie M. and Opal M. Conner. She married Michael L. Schnitzer, November 1, 1969. She would later marry James (Sonny) R. Johnson, October 7, 1992.
In 1957 her parents moved them to Taylor, Mo., where they ran Conner’s Corner truck stop from 1957 to 1965. Working in the restaurant of the truck stop she would meet many people leading to lifelong friendships.
She attended the first part of grade school in Quincy, Ill., After moving to Taylor, Mo., she attended grade school at Shannon School, a one room school house in Taylor. She graduated from Palmyra High School in 1966. After high school she worked at Capitol Records in Jacksonville, Ill., and later at Motorola in Quincy. In the late ‘70s she worked at Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton. She worked at the Days Inn in ’87 until she went to work for Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad in 1990. She moved to Galesburg, Ill., until her retirement in 1996.
She was a member of a bowling league for several years as well as a volleyball team. She loved these activities as well as her teammates. She coached LaGrange Girls Softball along with Nadine Bean for several years. She was active in the LaGrange School PTA and was a room mother for many years. She was an avid Cubs fan.
Donna is survived by one son, Travis Schnitzer (Amanda) of LaGrange, Mo.; one daughter, Kim Schnitzer of Taylor, Mo.; a granddaughter, Michaela Schnitzer and one grandson, Remington Schnitzer both of LaGrange; one brother, Freddie (Fritz) M. Conner Jr. (Marsha) of Ursa, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Johnson, her parents, Fred and Opal Conner and grandparents, Charles and Minnie Conner of Salem, Ia., and John Robert and Leta Meyers of Chesterfield, Ill.
Funeral services were held, February 19, 2022 at Davis Funeral Home in LaGrange, Mo., with Pastor Lance Bonnell officiating. Visitation was held prior to services. Honorary pallbearers: Beverly Vangaasbeek, Susie Meyers-Mole, Jack Cannon, Rhonda Caveny-Jones, Freddie M. Conner Jr., Audrey Rosentreter, Deana Riemann, Derel Dowland, Frank Meyers, Sheila Neastea, Bonny Tritsch and Jack Cason. Music: Wind Beneath My Wings, Amazing Grace, Flying on Your Own and He Touched Me.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society or to St. Vincent’s Home in Quincy.
