SARAH DEGARMO

Sarah Degarmo, 42, of Maywood, died October 14, 2023, surrounded by family at her home in Maywood, Mo.

Sarah was born January 30, 1981, in Carthage, Ill., to Harold and Maureen Quilhot Shumaker. She was married to David Degarmo on July 19, 2014, in Quincy, Ill. He survives.

Other survivors include her father and step-mother Harold and Carol Shumaker of Buffalo, Ill., mother and step-father Maureen and David Crawford of Carthage, Ill.; children Dade Self of Maywood, Mo., and Owen Degarmo of Maywood, Mo.; brother Jon Shumaker (Abby) of Quincy, Ill.; sister Leah Nickols (Phil) of Riverton, Ill.; Sarah was also a beloved Aunt to Michelle and Abigail Shumaker and Peyton and Tanner Degarmo.

Sarah was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Although Sarah was fond of family vacations to the Gulf Coast, one of her favorite things was just enjoying the small-town life. Activities like local football games on Friday nights, sitting by a roaring fire in the backyard while telling stories, laughing, and having a good time with those she loved, meant more to her than anything. She loved heading over to the family farm near Macomb to enjoy more time together. She was a woman with a strong Christian Faith and looked forward to Sundays to worship the Lord and be among her church family at Hester Community Church. In her eyes, close friends are the same as family and she loved them all.

Sarah liked to find time to pick up a good book to read or watch a horror movie now and then, because who doesn’t love a good scare? She worked hard at her job as a Supervisor for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Quincy, Ill., and put her heart and soul into her family and friends. Sarah was the light in so many lives, her positive upbeat outlook on life, the ability to find fun and humor in almost any situation, and her engaging smile are the things that immediately come to mind when thinking of Sarah. She was a loving and supportive wife, the absolute best coach’s wife, wonderful mother, daughter, and auntie who will be dearly missed by all.

Friends and Family are invited to Sarah’s visitation that will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday October 22, 2023, at Hester Community Church in Maywood, Mo.

A life celebration service will be held at 10 am Monday October 23, 2023, at Hester Community Church. Pastor Lance Bonnell will officiate.

The family is being served by Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra, Mo.

In Lieu of flowers memorials are requested to be given to an Education Fund in care of David Degarmo.
