John Donald “Don” Brown, age 93, passed away, Sunday, December 22, 2024 in Luther Manor Village, Hannibal, Mo.
Don was born to J.W. “Will” and Lida Pearl Marks Brown, October 9, 1931 near Derrahs, Mo. He married Lois Dean Miller on July 7, 1952 in LaGrange, Mo., with Rev. Luther Lewis officiating.
Don received his education at Derrahs Elementary School and graduated from Williamstown High School in 1949. As a teenager Don was a farm hand until entering the U.S. Army, February 6, 1952. He received his military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and his Unit was then sent to Germany in July 1952. He served with Co “C” 5th EOB in Germany until his discharge on January 6, 1954 at Fort Knox, KY.
Upon returning from service he worked as a farm hand near Marceline, Ill., and in 1958 returned to the Monticello area as a farm hand. He then farmed with his brother Dick Brown and later farmed on his own. Don retired from farming in 2005.
Don was a member of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church serving as a Deacon, Elder and Superintendent. He was active with the Williamstown Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief and was one of the original members. Don served on the Zion Hill Cemetery Board as Secretary-Treasurer for a number of years.
He enjoyed camping and belonged to the Quincy Area Travel Trailer Club and the NEMO Camping Club. He especially enjoyed taking the whole family camping at Montauk State Park for a number of years. Don liked hunting, fishing, camping and enjoyed family gatherings. Family was very important to him.
Survivors include his wife Lois Dean Brown of Hannibal, Mo.; children, Diane (Harry) Wilson and Dale (Eillen) Brown both of Williamstown, Mo.; grandchildren Darcy (Craig) Buckwalter and Joshua (Ashley) Wilson both of Canton, Mo., Derek (Angie) Danforth of Lewistown, Mo., Toby Wilson of St. Charles, Mo., Zach (Kyleigh) Cottrell of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kayla (Jacob) Scott of LaGrange, Mo.; fourteen great grandchildren; sister-in-law Rosetta Brown and a host of relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents Will and Lida Brown, daughter Debra Brown Danforth, grandson, Matt Wilson, granddaughter Amanda Brown, great granddaughter McKenzie Almanza, two brothers Vernon Brown and Richard (Dick) Brown, one sister Madalyn Davis, sister-in-law Dorothy Brown and brother-in-law Don Davis.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo., with Pastor Steve Jarvis officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be in Zion Hill Cemetery near Williamstown, Mo.
Pallbearers will be: Derek Danforth, Joshua Wilson, Toby Wilson, Craig Buckwalter, Zach Cottrell and Jacob Scott
The family suggests memorials be made to Zion Hill Cemetery in care of Davis Funeral Home, PO Box 108, Canton, MO 63435.
